If your ever in Grangemouth its worth a trip to the visitors centre to see the displays they have on show.
The forties field is the main source of oil to the refinery and the displays show how this crude is made into all the different products..ie diesel ,petrol, aviation fuel, sulpher etc. They basicly "boil" the crude and the vapours go up those towers you see on the refinery and at different temperatures ie deisel gets seperated from crude at about 200-350 degrees.. they all seperate and go down various pipes for further processing before becoming a finished product. Most of the "smoke" that you see is actully water vapour or condensate/steam from the vast cooling water system required in the process
The display also has a vast amount of old photographs showing the refinery in its early days when it was a small place extracting oil from local shale
A company called Scottish oils owned the refinery in the twenties part of the Anglo Persian oil company which later became BP
Picture shows the furnaces that boil the oil,the distilation columns and the cooling water towers with condensate/steam everywhere
