Is that a Lion fish?

I've got a funny story about how I accidentally killed half a dozen of those (a few hundered quids worth) if anyone wants to hear it?

There's a tropical fish shop on on the Paisley Road called M & D Dog Fish (I think it's changed its name to M & R Dog Fish now) and, Through a friend of a friend, I was asked to come in and tidy up the electrics behind the arrays of tanks along the downstairs walls which were like Jodrel Bank and in a terrible state.

Three quarters of the way through the job the shop took a delivery of live fish of both the freshwater tropical and marine variety and, upon hearing the owner (who bore an uncanny resemblance to Lou from TVs Neighbours incidentally) say they were going to have trouble getting these fish into their respective tanks before their travel bags of water cooled, I offered to help.

"See those polystyrene boxes over there in the alcove?" said the owner (I can't for the life of me remember his name), "could you get the fish out and put them in the tanks above?".

"No problem." says I and disappears into the alcove to begin the process of piscatorial transfer.

Now, I didn't know - I wasn't told - that fish are particularly fragile individuals when it comes to transferring to a different environment and that the bags containing the fish should be first placed into the new tank and left for half an hour (to allow for the temperatures to equalise) then the bags should be punctured and allowed to sit for a further 10-15 minutes to allow for any difference in salinity to normalise via osmosis through the now porous bag. Only after these two important steps should I release the fish by fully bursting the poly bag and allowing them to swim free.

No.

What did I do? I just ripped the bags open and allowed the poor buggers to plop into their new home, their new deadly poisonous home, and walked away thinking "Good Job, Well Done."

10 minutes later - cue half a dozen dead and dying Lion Fish. Oops.

At the time I remember the fish being worth a bastard fortune so it must have cost the bloke a few grey hairs at least.
