I miss having my stall in the Barras... it was a good community with the other traders. Just a pity its dwinddled into a shthole

Totally agree with you there Stu.
I remember years ago working on a stall in the barras watching the stall next door till the guy went for a piss, bookies, tea, whatever.
There was a good camaraderie going on in the place auld characters like the hot peanut man and the candyfloss man were revered and respected.
Now its steal your glass eye and sell yi a few dodgy dvd's to git it back.

I Think the days of the barras as an landmark are over and someone behind the scenes has the site marked for luxury chicken coops....
I might be wrong but all it would take would be a careless flame in the ballroom.
Traders looks like it will fall doon itself... and Pearsons in Moncur St will be right behind it.. If not first.

Most of the family live in Canada and want to sell it off... all except the Ballroom since it makes money. The problem is, the majority stakeholder doesnt want to sell

Great idea for a thread Minxy and that first photo is stunning

I know everyone will have happy memories of the Barras but it really hasn't changed and I think it is age that gives use a different perspective.

I understand that a couple of those involved with the Barras have plans to do something to improve it but not take away any of the real feel of the Barras.

Think Fjord may be right thou and well done for taking the photos Minxy

Don't know if I would have the nerve to get my camera out down there but you never know

The solitary result of my one and only experience of taking photographs at the Barras:-

This was winter, 1979/80, and was for an article that my buddy Harry Longbaugh was writing for Sounds, on the emergence of the Barrowland Ballroom as a venue for bands.

After taking this photo I was approached by a couple of scary individuals not-so-politely asking what I was up to.

Exit neilmc.....

I could have appeared in that photo Neil

During this period I spent almost every weekend down the Barras.

Notice the lettering on the front isn't there

I think it had been temporarily removed for renovation.

This might be the only photo of the Ballroom sans lettering.....
