ok, clues!
building is no longer standing, demolished in the 90s. when demolished, it was probably about the last 'original' building left in the street (although there is a rather large one still at the other end - way, way, off to the left of the photo)
there are, however, lots of other buildings around, pure luck that i managed to not phot them
i mentioned 'early morning' as we are facing roughly south - later in the day, the building would be in shadow
p.s. james was rather warm.......

Is it at the top of Taylor street, where the new student's residences are now?

*we have a winner*
the photo is taken looking up taylor st., towards rottenrow east. the john anderson building etc. are off to the right, birkbeck court residence flats off to the left.
this was 81 rottenrow east, balmanno residence for the university of strathclyde
at the time the only other original building on this street was (and now is the only one) the barony kirk, at the junction with High street.
ther were, i remember also some tenements on collins st., which were made into student flats, when they went i don't know, 90s too i suppose
balmanno was replaced by the lego structure shown (chancellor's hall, i think), which actually straddles rottenrow east.
the yellow box is where balmanno was, the building to the right of this being the approx. point where balmanno street once emerged onto rottenrow from george street (must be where the name come fi' - it must have disappeared 50s/60s sometime)
