The Kelvingrove Tunnel - now accessibleThe Kelvingrove Tunnel (once part of the same Central Glasgow Railway line as the Botanics Station and Kirklee/Kelvinbridge tunnel), which is normally rendered impenetrable due to a steel gate and a heavy duty padlock, is currently accessible, thanks to some cad with a crowbar bending back one of the bars.
Here's a video I made of my explorations therein, fascinating I'm sure you'll agree:

We didn't break the gate; my mate noticed it was damaged while walking along the Kelvin with his girlfriend, so he came to tell me and I grabbed my camera. There were no signs or warnings to "keep out", and no one there to tell us to leave, so I'd assume this comes under the good old Scottish "right to roam".

Cheers man. Gonna do a similar one for the Botanics Station soon, and maybe Lennox Castle Hospital at some point too, if it's still possible.

Just be careful and mindful that there has been road strengthening works going on in the tunnels

Duly noted, matey, cheers.
I did notice the other week there were some workies drilling at the side of Great Western Road, and climbing in and out of a hole in the ground right above where the Botanics station is.

Haha, yeah, I was thinking that when I was down there. I was half expecting to find a half-dead woman cocooned into the limestone formations.

I'm loving the underground Greenock pics on your Flicker page! Was the tunnel full of hardcore 'nock jackies? Or would I be likely to get through it without a doin'?
Also, does anyone know, is Lennox Castle still UrbExible? I'm sure I heard they were gonna do something with the site.

Cheers guys!
Got a new tripod and wide-angle lens for my camcorder arriving during the week so might take 'em for a spin down the Botanics Station next weekend. If I do, I'll post the vid on here (although I'm sure any Glasgow-based urban explorer worth his salt has already been down there...).

Buggery! I was hoping to go back there soon.
Thanks for all the positive comments guys. My next project is to get into the Yorkhill tunnel (near the Transport Museum), but it's going to need to wait until I can afford the equipment; the only way down is through the ventilation shafts as the entrance is definitively sealed, so I'm saving up to buy a caving ladder. Dangerous, I know, but should be worth it.

Inside the grounds of the yorkhill hospital - go in the big steel gate on old dumbarton road, turn left, straight ahead are some bushes and some railings. The shafts are hidden behind the railings, right next to the big high concrete wall.

Its not really a shaft as such... its just that theres a bridge before the tunnel creating a void space

I know exactly where your meaning. And yeah it is more of a void space between what is actually the tunnel and the bridge carrying Old D. Road.
Let us know if your successful! Get loads of pics!

Yeah, that's right! I couldn't think of the correct term, the closest thing I could liken it to is the vents above the botanics station, with the same kind of girders and buttresses around the top of it. But yeah, it just looks like a gap where the walled-in line is open to the sky for a short space before going underground. It is cut out about a dozen or so yards below the surrounding ground level though, so there's quite a deep drop to get down there, definitely a leg-breaker if you're not careful.

Hi all. Myself and friends ahve visited the Kelvingrove Tunnel. You and your pal David, one word for the video, SUPERB. I tpyed Kelvingrove Tunnel into youtube expecting to find nout and I found your video, superb!!!!. I was down taking photographs which were on my sire but unfortunately that had been hacked into so I am the middle of reinstating / adding galleries to the site at present. I have visited the Yorkhill Tunnel vent also just down from the carpark for Yorkhill Childrens' Hospital. I visited the area about 8 O'clock at night with a freind and there was this odd man who was walking down to the western portal from the road as we were walking up the road from the portal to the air vent via the carpark at Yorkhill Hospital. We turned our back for one sec and turned around again and the guy vanished which we found very wierd. We arrived at the air vent and I went down on the pillars and I could hear footsteps for sure and so could my friend so that has gave me doubts about trying to access this tunnel, bearing in mind the eastern portal to the tunnel is filled in inside the live tunnel at Exhibition Centre so when you are in there you need to hope no one is at your back. A good group needed for Yorkhill definitely. Kelvingrove is sacary but no sign of life apart from tennants lager cans and irn bru cans which date back to 1994!!!

Yeah its like I said on another thread. The fencing put in place at this tunnel entrance could put a prison to shame.
This might sound like a rediculous idea, but do you think its possible to gain permission to have a look in some of these tunnels? I mean, as we have seen recently from the Botannics/Great Western Road tunnels, they are still accessed on occasion (by what I assume is Network Rail) for checking. Has anyone ever tried going down that route?
|

I know people who want to go down that road. I see it as a waste of time because the answer will clearly be no due to the condition some of these tunnels are actually in. London Road, Kelvinbridge and Kelvingrove Tunnels being the worst for me I would say in terms of flooding. Kelvindale is a good one. You can just walk straight through it. Worth a try I suppsose but like I say, i would suspect the answer to be a no - no. Botanic Gardens was good today btw:P Pics to follow tomorrow. I'm shattered

The disused ones aren't checked by Network Rail, they mostly still belong to BRB (British Railways Board) Residuary who are responsible for the inspection, upkeep and security of them.

I enjoyed that trip down the tunnel, I had wondered what they were like, now I know.
I noticed a few months ago that there were large tyres marks in the Aits vents at botanic gardens, anyone know what was going on.

Thanks man! Yeah, I'd want to take more than two people if I was going down into the Yorkhill tunnel, even if only for the safety element - you want more than one person to hand if you break your back going down.
I doubt there're any tramps or anything living down there, purely because it's so difficult to get in out of. Is it possible that the footsteps you heard were drops of water falling into a puddle inside the tunnel? You know how when it echoes around the tunnel it can sound a lot louder and more "solid" than you'd expect.
That said - there are a gang of middle-aged boozers that hang out on the adjoining bridge from time to time. I've bumped into them a few times when I've been exploring and they're mostly harmless - only interesting in fishing (illegally) in the Kelvin and drinking Special Brew.
