WOW Took me ages to get through, but worth every minute
Urban Glasgow is lucky to have you, thanks for sharing these.
I remember most of the stuff in the pics from my teens and was involved in the demo of some of the lesser known buildings later.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
The last few of Cowcaddens are the area where I lived till 1967. The Kiwi was my Dad's local for many years even after we had left the area. I don't recognise the photo of Airdrie Street South East though.
The one you have showing the multi storey car park at the bottom of Cowcaddens looks like it was the gushet where the water fountain which is currently located in the front of the Herald building was situated.
Thank you Steapadair

The photographs, invaluable though they are, would make less sense without the captions. Thank-you for the captions.

I remember being dragged along to the city cash tailors with the provy line for the school rigoot.......
Great pics and so many memories.

Thanks all. Must be nearly halfway through the archive now.
Alex - the one captioned 'southeast of Airdrie St' (maybe '...from...' would have been clearer) shows Cowcaddens St, virtually the same as the next shot, from a less acute angle. Can't remember if Airdrie St still actually existed then.

Asolutely brilliant. The King St/Dunlop St ones I especially liked, as its great to see the area around St Enoch's before the demolition. The Cowcaddens pics also, as my Dad used to stay in Airdrie Street. Fantastic, very well done

Incredible photos, every bit as important as those by John R. Hume.
You may have already answered this but will you be giving copies to the Mitchell ?
Not saying you should do this, just curious.

Thank you, thank you Streapadair !
I followed your trip from start to finish, imagining I was looking out from the top deck of a tram or bus in the late 1960's, before my family left for Australia.
Fantastic memories and thank you for them.

The left side of Airdrie Street looking from Cowcaddens was demolished. At the bottom of Airdrie Street on this die was our house which was entered from Port Dundas Road. The living room and kitchen looked onto Airdrie Street.
Only the building were the Kiwi was located still stood.
Duke - when did your dad leave Airdrie Street?
Thanks again Streapadair for sharing such a great collection with us.

I thought that last night
Did streapadir perhaps just re arrange them

I thought, and James73 agreed, that the thread would be more 'user friendly' if divided into a number of pages, rather than occupying one enormous page, so I spent a boring hour deleting it all and re-uploading them 2 at a time (apparently 10 posts = 1 page). All for your convenience, dear viewers.
I took the opportunity to add a couple, e.g. old Metropole in Stockwell St..

An hour well spent in my book
BTW the drams are piling up behind the bar and not forgetting HH's very generous offer of a full half pint... he's usually tighter than two coats of paint when it comes to getting them in even Falseface can stretch it to a 500ml can of tesco value lager.

fantastic collection of photographs. I started work in Washington Street in 1971 and would wonder around the town during my lunch break (we got an hour in those days). A couple l particulary like is one taken of the corner of Holm Street and West Campbell Street showing the premises of McPhail & Meikle. This company was owned and run by Rangers legend Bob McPhail with his son Robbie and nephew John. The other photograph l like was taken on the Broomielaw with a view of Dicks Bar. This was the first pub l was ever in and was the local for our staff at lunch time. Having worked in Washington Street for 18 years l saw many changes over the years and your photos have captured an older Glasgow very well. Do you have a flickr account? It would be great to see them in a larger view.

Glasgow Cross Station, built 1896, rebuilt 1923, closed 1964, demolished 1977. April 1973

Am i crazy or does this seem like the ideal location for a city station ?
I can understand the problems with its island location and pedestrians but it just seems like an awful waste.
Argyle St and walk back or Bridgeton and walk forward or Glasgow Cross... I know which i would prefer.
and god knows they have re-routed the traffic enough times in the city centre that this would give them something else to play with.

The line was closed in 1964 and partially reopened in 1979. Rather than reopen
Glasgow Cross station they built an entirely new station at Argyle Street. It's still
there and could be reopened but sadly the building was thoughtlessly demolished
sometime in the 1970s IIRC.

Actually James i have seen a few photos from further back than that one the station was more ornate than in Streaps photo.
Though this is going a bit beyond his time also no doubt.
If canon ever get round to 64bit drivers for mscanner i will get them blitzed in.
