Stobhill railway station?

Hi,new poster here!,great site by the way
i'm a glasgow hack driver, and i was taking this old boy up to stobhill hosp.On the way he was telling me that there used to be a railway station at stobhill, and all the casualties in the world war II were taken to the station then into the hospital, keeping them away from prying eyes,so the war recruitment wouldn't be affected by the horrific site of mangled bodies!

I had no idea there was a station there and was wondering if there was any pics of it around?

Welcome to Urban Glasgow Earl glad you like the site. I am sure there will be someone along shortly who will be able to cast some light on the train station.

I am sure there is a lot more to come Earl. We are all surprised at the volume and quality of the photos posted here  - old and new. Maybe some of your passengers would be interested in knowing about this site so I hope you don't keep it a secret and spread the work.

Keep posting

I will do Alex, thanks for the welcome and the links Fastnet, it was a temporary platform then, i've never heard it mentioned before, very interesting reading about it

Have a look at the virtual mitchell as they have some pictures of the station in use. There is also an aerial photograph somewhere which clearly shows the direction of the cutting the branch line takes infront of the nurses houses and curves under the water tower. I believe there is a gap in the ground with plant machinery below ground level at the base of the tower

A bit of hotlinking...

There is a line the curves around the outside of the hospital grounds... just look for the tree line. Comes in on the upper left and you can just about make out the branch that goes into the station

Brilliant bit of researching Stu.
Never heard of this myself but am alaways amazed at how many people bypass these daily and it takes one curious question to reveal all.

As a side note Bangour Village has one of these too... Hidden from prying eyes.

I cant take credit for finding that aerial shot... but there is another one showing the cutting a bit better.
I find that some peoples eyes need a little training before they can see former railway cuttings from maps and aerial shots

Old A/Z map of the area which shows the railway line going around the hospital but no station is marked

Used to play on the line as a kid around 1967 and cant recall any station or remnants of a station near the hospital. Its still possible to walk part of the line if you go along the path at Littlehill golf clubhouse and you can make out parts of the line in Balornock and Barmulloch

And the view you will see today out and about in your taxi

Looking at this photo its possible that the station was situated in the goods yard just at the bottom of bargaryhill rd just below Southview terrace on the A/Z and then the casulties were driven into the hospital..The perimeter wall of the goods yard was still there a few years ago..will have a look and see if its still there

Just found this on Wickipedia
In September 1914, at the beginning of the First World War, the hospital was requisitioned by the Royal Army Medical Corps and wounded servicemen arrived by specially converted 'ambulance trains' terminating at a temporary railway platform built within the hospital grounds. A staff of 240 nurses as well as volunteers from the St. Andrew's Ambulance Association cared for over 1000 patients at any given time, until the return of the hospital to civilian use in the spring of 1920.

Thanks for the research, i knew a old line ran up wallacewell rd but knew nothing about it going round the hospital

glad i enquired!

I lived in Milton and Springburn and I remember trains coming in to that area, it was a goods yard at that time, coal and such like for the hospital?

Bye for now, norrie
