Staropolska / Sikorski Polish Club

I have to confess, the first time I went there for a late Sunday lunch I felt a bit like an intruder, groups of Scottish and Polish people of all generations meeting up for what seems to be their traditional coffee chat. This has to do with my tendency to be a bit shy, and not with the people who were really helpful and welcoming.

The second time I felt brave enough to enter the place that still states "Members only" ( although no longer applicable ) on the front door without asking anyone if I was welcome (Dutch courage due to the eggnog I had) and walked down on narrow stairs into the lower ground floor of a traditional massive Westend flat, drooling for that same lovely dish I had the last time.
And what a warm welcome I had, even though over a month had passed, I was still recognised .
This time I knew what beer I wanted ( Warka Strong, 7%, as previously recommended by the restaurant manager) and well aware of the large portions I only ordered a small tomato salad and Bigos with bread as main course.

Bigos, a sauerkraut based dish with various meats, tastes like something my Auntie in Austria used to make when I was wee, and there isn't anything better for the soul than an honest authentic dish that comforts you and fills you up.
My dinner partner had half a pig in the mean time.
Then it was time for vodka, jagermeister and the like. To aid digestion, of course.
There is a small bar to the left of the stairs with a pool table, where an American guy and a Polish one attempted to play a game.
I say attempted because one of them was too happily drunk   and the other one was thrown by the fact that the white ball was significantly smaller than all the others.

Didn't take long and we were engaged in discussions with folks from around the globe about different things, mainly about the white ball being smaller than the others, but also Glasgow folks who had been going there for years, and it felt like we were in a friend's living room.

Here's a bit of a colder review in today's Times, seems like restaurant critics can't enjoy themselves the way I do.
Oh and PS: Forty pounds he says, dinner for two and wine! Goodness, half a litre of strong beer was £ 2.50, our main courses were £ 5.00 / £ 6.00 and my salad I think was less than two pounds.
Generous shots of vodka and Jagermeister at the bar: £ 1.60.
What on earth have they ordered, I wonder ????
