Postal Workers! ***May contain rant***

What is with them? Some of us would like our mail delivered the same century it was sent. If you don't like your job why not try a novel approach and get another fecking one! It takes NO skill whatsoever to put letters through doors.

Working conditions? Last time I checked the posties weren't being randomly machine-gunned by management. Why not just sack the work-shy bastards and replace them all. With 2.47 million unemployed I can't imagine they would need to look hard to find replacements.

In a word
Cutbacks.
As for skill there is the slight matter of what is involved to get it from sender to recipient, Alas some are under the illusion this is a fully automated solution.
If only, there is the slight matter of illegible handwriting, ink fade incorrect address, Postcode errors, damaged items and just plain machine errors and over sized items.

This in turn all leads to the human input which we all know is far from complete, and not to single out anyone particular group English is far removed as a first language on most new employees.
Then we come to the part of job that is called final sort. this is done by hand every house has its individual wee box through wich you need to sort what seems like a billion letters all before you have even left the office.
Then there is the doubling up of rounds (Cost Cutting)
Whilst no great fan of the post office myself i fully understand all that is involved in the process of the A to B transfer.
Want to blame anyone blame the government after all they keep the monopoly that is post office uk rolling along.

As an interesting side note.
TNT BusinessPost and countless others now feed most business mail into the post office cheaper than you can do it yourself at the counter.
There is some to-ing and fro-ing there as these companies try to get up to speed and gather enough mail to make it worthwhile sending it to the P.O on a DAILY basis so your mail in reality although none will admit to it could be sitting in one of their depots for a few days...

Missed a few interviews for this very reason and had mail deliveries as late as 7pm.

Please do not ask me how i know all this as i may have already said to much

It IS a fully automated solution, though. Human intervention is only required during the sorting process for things which fall outside parameters the machines can't deal with. I've known enough people who work for the PO to know that it's money for old rope and there's NO skill whatsoever in doing it. You might need to learn how to do that job but that's not the same as developing a skill.

Collecting the mail - honestly, where is the skill in driving round in a wee red van opening postboxes and removing a sack full of mail?

Sorting the mail - again, where is the skill in letting a machine do 90% of the work and keeping people around to sort the abnormal items?

Delivering the mail - For years the most visible of the PO service has been getting worse. Single deliveries, mail posted through the wrong doors. This might have something to do with the employment of barely literate immigrants but it's the PO doing it. No-one is asking them to make their service worse.

My argument is dead simple. Stop striking or threatening to strike over everything. The public only want their mail delivered and when people threaten to strike who work in an organisation which can at best be described as utterly sh!te then the public have no sympathy at all.

Ah the simplified version
Always spoken by those who have no idea of the inner workings of the post office.
Money for old rope indeed it is i have no problem with that ...
The 90% machine work tad over stated
Driving a wee red van great
immigrants well thats down to equal opportunities.

The machine sorts to town or postal area only the rest is manual.
Striking well i see no point in that as it never achieves nothing.

But like i said before and it is the only real fact you have decided to miss is the outsourcing to other companies by companies that leave your mail laying in sorting offices for 3-4 days before handing it to the post office.
That is indeed where the problems lay.
Not by the wee guy that sticks it through your door.

I am not an employee of RM or its subsiduaries but have a firm grounding in the mailing industry as a whole.
Sometimes it really is outwith their control.

Mr brother is a postman...

Have you seen the episode of Top Gear when they race the Royal Mail from one end of the country to the other? It shows the full scale of how the system works
wee minx

I visited a sorting office years ago, and it's a bloody busy place...it was in Giffnock.  I was very surprised at how un-automated it was. Loads of problems with unreadable addresses for a start, wrong postal codes..all sorts of stuff.
I go out on walks around where I stay and the posties walk almost as fast as me sometimes..and I'm going at a pace that fits a song like Fire starter
Admittedly they make mistakes and put stuff through the wrong doors, but its human error.
Right Saltrmarketeer...whit happened to get ye riled?

I have just seen the specsavers advert.

Apparently Pat has broken his glasses.

News 24!

Those and fecking train drivers!

This thread wasn't meant as a dig at people I don't know or to question the quality of their work but overall; I mean for fucks' sake, they strike for fun!

I saw the episode of Top Gear mentioned. It just re-inforced my opinion. The Post Office is a logistical operation. The machines do most of the work and it's the outsized or incorrectly addressed and labelled stuf which needs the attention. Once you get down to sorting for delivery it's hardly NASA material to take letters and dump them into labelled bins.

What's going to be next? Striking because someone redecorated the canteen? If they don't like their job they should piss off and let someone in who is prepared to do it. It's not as if any of the coal-face operations are vocational.

It could be worse, you could be in a job making wee red rubber bands all day   ...admittedly they never fail to turn up on time at the doorstep, without fail (pure handy BTW).

I feel a useless things thread coing on
