Just a beautiful shot Cybers, look at that moon reflection on the building too...lovely...I think you have a lot of patiience in your photography. and it well pays off

To tell the truth that photo took me the best part of an hour to do...
I took light readings from the science centre glass... Incident readings from the metal work on both the science centre and the imax metal work and then still bracketed the shot as a balance for error.
Got the usual question from a nosey police woman who was quite nice about the whole thing and asked why we were so fascinated by the building. she was curious as i had a light meter instead of a camera.

She was pretty cool about the whole thing but someone at the beeb had complained...

Whitevale Street Baths
Front
Rear
I have been told the rear was houses, does anyone know ? ... Cybers ?
|
cybers
|
Certainly was ...
Originally tied housing I am unsure of when itr changed.
Houses were still occupied long after the baths had closed.
If you stand in the car park on the gable that faces towards Duke St you can see the balcony for the doors.
The old girl looks in a rather sad state...
My Nana worked there till she retired. She was always so proud of the baths always mopping the bloody floor on rainy days even though it was not her job.
Never ask someone to do what you wont do yourself was her words.
|
Scary
|
Thanks cybers, I saw what looks like a verandah from a vantage point up the hill a bit
|
Scary
|
Meant to add, word on the street is that its all getting demolished with the Baths facade being retained, but so far that is hearsay.
|
cybers
|
Funnily enough i was talking with an agent (Estate) I know and he had happened to mention 18 flats behind the retained facade but he was still unsure if it was myth or fact. but he also had said that whitevale flats had 10 years still to run but someone else is under the impression 2 years max.
Think the old baths have had it as far as resurrection is concerned it was in a pretty sad state the last time i was in so a facade retention could be the only viable option.

The B&W just about sums that place up, no amount of colour would change the perception of it.

Tho to be fair the Shawbridge one is slightly better maintained than most of the other ones...

Nice one Groover mate .. I'm still struggling taking pics in low light.
Doin' my box in actually.
|
Stuball
|
What are you having trouble with?
|
Doorstop
|
I know that you should have a large aperture and a longer exposure time in order to allow more light to hit the sensor/film, and that lowering the 'f' setting widens the aperture but with my Lumix it doesn't seem to make much of a difference on the exposure meter and the pictures come out underexposed.
Changing the iso setting helps somewhat but with all the incumbent graininess that comes with a higher iso number.
I was taking some pictures in just some ambient low light at a family do the other night and I really struggled to get any decent definition as the slightly longer exposure time required made for much blurriness on anything other than a static target.
I've seen pin sharp night-time pictures here of moving cars for fcuk's sake and I'm bamboozled as to how they do it.
|
Stuball
|
Ahh, this might be one of the limitations of the camera. Low light usually means longer exposure and a tripod or something stable is required. Raising the iso will work but, as you've already figured out, the trade off is grain. I would have suggested trial and error with settings but I get the impression that you've exhausted all these things
|
Doorstop
|
I suspected as much Stu .. thanks for taking the time to ask though. Cheers.
|
Lone Groover
|
Definition always falls away in the dark, unless you have the patient to stand behind yer tripod for a week !
BTW Doorstop, let me know if you want that tripod ?
|
cybers
|
Brilliant definition of the process Stu.
Getting moving objects stock still the way i achieve this is second sync flash.
best i can muster of an explanation is you shoot your exposure and right before the end of the shot and the curtains close the flash fires and freezes everythinig thats moving.
My favoured Sigma flash cant achieve second sync so i need to go to an older less powerful canon one
Be careful where you use this though as motorists Will come round the block to check you are not the traffic
