Great pictures

Darn i lived there 20 years from 1960-80 and don't have one photo of Southie from that time.
I was lucky I saw the best years, my mum & dad stayed another 10 and in the end were very, very happy to get out of the scheme they loved.

I remember when it was all houses around here...

Did i mention before this was a take away it was a great wee chippy, Its original use was the Doctors surgery.
But when that closed we had to get the 49 round to the one in Barrhead Rd.
Once i went on the bus with my mum holding a towel to my eyebrow that i had split open. I got 5 stitches and a lolly off the doc for being such a brave boy.

Now i think mums would call an Ambulance.

I don't remember the doctors' surgery, but I remember immediately pre-Sky Dragon it was one of the 'Victor' chain of chippies.

THose white letter i can see are the same size as the one's that were above Maxi's and i think all the shops early on.

The 49 terminus was out side my bedroom window so visiting relitive did not sleep much as they were mostly put in my room.
I never noticed the bus noise

OK i have one photo of Southie C.81 but i did not put it up as i don't know how much of interest it will be. My daughter in my mums veranda.

One thing you will note the trees are gone from the roundabout another the original colour of the row on whitacers it was the same as all the rest of the scheme. I have no idea when it was painted red.

There is a sespool down in the field from what is now called Parkhouse Nursing Home. This was the stables referred to by Jock previously. Red something cant remember the old name.

They photos were taken about a year ago Jock. I didn't like to venture round the back.

I didn't know this was a farm. It just looks like a house but never really paid that much attention to it.

Guys... this is a great thread but to my eternal shame I think the only time I was ever in Nitshill was when a bit of stuff took me back to her flat after I had got off with her in the Savoy in the 80s...cant remember if it was a successful night or not cause I was pisxxed..will make a pilgrimage soon see if I can retrace my stepps..camera in hand

Will give you directions to the most interesting place for some photos if you don't manage to find the place where you were taken on that drunken night all those years ago

Alex .. I think you are totaly right. I usualy have difficulty remembering my previous nights shenanagens in the west end or wherever... but its amazing what a fresh pair of eyes can see so will go urban exploring..

Kennomeat was bought by Spillars who in turn was recently bought by Nestle purina.And like just about every company in Barrhead that gets purchased by an International they shut it down.You may remember the town as a place that supplied jobs for all the surrounding areas but nowadays it's more of a commuter town for paisley and Glasgow..
Think i read recently that bar East Renfrewshire council (newish offices built next to the sports centre) the largest employer was Tesco in Kelbourne st (next to the old railway arches)

Anyway the old factory still stands derelict,they were hoping that people would let parts of it,the council have set aside land across from Leggat (the old high rise)and beside Spillars but with the current economic climate i cant see it working just yet.

Both my mum & Dad worked at the Kennomeat and i had quiet a few friends that left school & went to work at Shanks,

I remember my mum telling me that when some of the women fancied a break they would jam a can in the conveyor lines and everything would stop till the maintenance came out & fixed it.
But one day it went wrong and the plant was down for days, several women got the sack for that one.

The best job my mum had in Barrhead though was in the ticket office of the George cinima. I used to walk up there and get in for free.

I knew the old bingo on Cross Arthurlie was a cinema but didn't know about the George on main st..

Opened 1911 by George Urie Scott, on ground originally used a cooperage.
This replaced his earlier Barrhead Picture Playhouse, which had been converted from a roller skating rink.
The Pavilion was rebuilt 1935 by McNair & Elder.
Renamed George from 1969; closed 1977.
Later demolished in the mid 1980s.

Cant remember ever seeing this in my walks to the swimming when i was young,whereabouts on main st was it?

AA Battery Nitshill
Recent Page Trail:

A World War II anti-aircraft battery was sited in Nitshill, to the south of Glasgow. Site number GSG4 (early), S4 (later). Part of the Clyde AA Defences, the site was also known as Darnley.

The battery was equipped with four emplacements, armed with 3.7-inch guns, and a GL Radar mat to the wesr, An accommodation camp lay to the south. Two further emplacements were later added the battery. The site was visible in aerial photography taken in 1946, when the two additional emplacements were noted lying northwest and southeast of the usual arc of four emplacements. Records show that six guns had been provided by 91943, but that the GL Radar Mk IA had been removed. Some 42 huts, mostly Nissen, could be seen in the area between Corslett Road and the Aurs Burn to the south.

There are no surviving remains of the battery, the site and surrounding area has been occupied by a housing development.

Hi All,had a couple of days off and it.s amazing what comes flooding back.Jock do you remember at the side of the byre at Parkhouse there was a pit where the winter feed for the cows was stored.I cant recall what we called it but it was the residual slurry from breweries. the smell was lovely,but not when some bugger tipped you into it !!!

johnmcn, Can't remember the cinema shown,but do remember two cinemas,the Pavilion and the Centre.The Pavilion I remember as a bit of a flea pit and the other as the posh cinema.On Saturday mornings they had the thrupny rush,when all the kids got in for three pence,old money,and were able to watch a couple of cartoons,a serial,and a movie.You could always tell whether it had been a cowboy,a war film or a pirate film by the way the kids shot or killed each other when they came out.Great days!
I used to love when ,as a special treat,I was taken to the evening show and had a fish tea with Vimto in the Centre Cafe which was just down from the cinema.Is the Cafe still there ?

It's me again,jock58,in your wanderings did you ever go into Coats's Woods?We used to jump over the wall into Clark's Park,turn right and head for the woods.There was a wee stream running down from the end of the wall at the back of Darvel St. where we made wee boats and sailed them .When you entered the woods it was a different world,we made Tarzan swings which scared the sh** out of you when you went out over the Levern.There was a big private house owned I believe by one of the Coats family who owned the thread mills in Paisley.Their housekeeper had a lovely wee cottage at the gate.

I remember one school day the buses were off so me & my mate decided to walk home from Craigie to Southie.

Rather than take the usual route up Peat rd we thought we would try cutting through to the tunnel on Kennishead road.

Well as we passed the Bundy a group of friendly youth came out to meet us screaming welcome and waving a variety of sticks and bars.
Not feeling like a meeting of cultures we legged it and were chase all the way to the Priesty boarder. At a safe distance we turned and waved our thanks to the Bundy boys for providing us with some much needed exercise.
My mate and I carried on laughing off this near miss until we were around the Priesthill terminus area when another group of young locals the priesty young team came up the road to greet us. Not knowing that we had already exercised that day they gave chase all the way to the kennishead road.
Thank God, that Darnely was not built then as we could not have gone through that a third time in one day.
I suppose we should be grateful that unlike me & my mate these local boys knew how to respect borders.

Hello,
i live on the parkhouse estate and it has been great to read all these stories of the area around. I have walked my dogs around the waulkmill burn for the last 25 years regularly covering the paths and area of the new dams to darnley park, and i can remember a few old ruins of brickwork at the back of parkhouse estate off of Corselet road. I tried to find them last wekend but could only really get a few sections of rubble deep in the undergrowth so the pictures arent too good.

The first one is off an old building

this one is the rubble left where a gateway used to be. I was told once, that this used to be an entrance into an Army camp.

While i was there i took a couple of other pictures of what i remember as the stepping stones, which were at the river, behind the Cottages on Corselt road, is this the same as others remember?

I see that this is still in use today! Of course it wasn't the only way across the Burn, but the branch has been broken a bit since then.

I think that i might have some old photo's from mid eighties showing some of the area, i will try and dig them out when i next get time.

By my reckoning the gun emplacements must be around about what is now Langford drive in parkhouse. All the land around where the new scheme at Parklands has been built was bulldozed and shaped to make the building easier, the original contours have been dramatically changed. In one of the old fields there was a carved rock besides a gateway which had a swastika carved on it, the story was that german POW's worked in the fields as farmhands and it was one of them who carved it.

Hello All,Yes John that's the house and I see the gatehouse is still there as well.There was a vegetable garden to the rear with fruit trees,one of the major dares was to bring back a piece of fruit from it.Sorry to say I was never that brave,there was a bloody big dog around the place!!!If you walked through the woods towards the Levern Bridge on Nitshill Road there was a white painted house close to the road.I was told the postman lived in it ,not sure though.

Well done Neil that map certainly helps pinpoint the actual location and well done Jock for doing the overly.

This has got me thinking that there may have been photo taken by the developer prior to clearing the site in preparation for building. May be worth asking if they have any archives for the site. They may even have been taken by Planning Officers for the Planning Application. If I am not mistaken the houses, in the area where the battery was located, were built by Wimpy.

Details of the Planning Application will hopefully be in the archives. I will check to see if they are available

You're right Alex: it was Wimpey, who later sold the western half of the site to Barratt (Carswellbank), at a tidy profit. However, the AA battery was wholly within the Wimpey half, as John and Jock's overlays show.

Hi all

I don't remember much as I was only eight when we left for Australia. I remember Hartstone Road dividing into two sections at the end. I think I went left which led to a park. I walked up Househillwood Road to where there were shops and I think opposite the shops I walked up a bit of a grass hill to my school which was a Catholic Primary School. Can't remember the name. I went on to microsoft live maps and I found my street and the house I was born in (No 138). I found the Catholic Church I attended but I could not find the school. Maybe someone might know my brother, his name is Ian Hopkins, he is 8 years older than me. He had just turned 17 when we left Scotland.

Would live photos where I was born.

The Rosehill Housing Co-op built houses on the site a few years ago.

To the right of the above photo are the shops.

Rosehill took over the shops and removed the houses above. This is what they look like now.

The shaded one at the bottom must have been the HQ as it was a group of sheds and open buildings.

You could walk from one end to the other at ground level that was roof level, or along the roads that were level with corselet rd but seemed sunken.
Alex it would be a real shame if all trace of this site has been lost i hope you have some luck in tracking down some photos.

Jock I am sure they must have taken photos. The problem will be tracking down the files. There are aerial photos but I think you need to go through to Edinburgh to view them unless the Council has a copy

James I think the photo was taken whilst the main supermarket was still extending their shop. all the shops are currently occupied as far as I know

Sorry Neil I was forgetting that Mumsie said she walked up the lane which would have taken her to the annexe. I didn't know that is has been part of St Robert's

When I worked up there it was called Overtown Community Centre.

There were a number of school annexes in the area. Maybe someone with more knowledge would be able to confirm which school was associated with each of them. The current Cardonald Priesthill Campus located next to the current Househillmuir school was an old annexe. I understand that the other former community centre - Stan's Den (Priesthill Youth and Community Centre) which was located near the Brock Burn at Muirshiel Crescent was also used as a school annexe. There was an annexe located on Prestwick Street - near the site of the original Levern Primary School. It was latterly used as a Learning Centre for adults with special needs. Was this a school annexe?

I heard that the building which I knew as Househill Community Centre was previously a school. It certainly looked like a school but I have no details of what it would have been called.

Does anyone know of any others

i have tried to pinpoint on this map where the relevant sites are, hope it works.

Much of the land in this area was flattened then landscaped when they put in the drainage for the new estate, but some old features still exist, the old mill lade can still be seen alongside the path at some points.

Hi all,The school was St.Robert's Annex and your right Alex ,the main St.Robert's school was in Priesthill.I seem to remember saying on one of the posts that I sat my Quallie in the main St.Robert's school.
I remember the annex well because when attending St.Bernard's Primary the toilets were out in the play park.They were unroofed so that in winter the water in the pans froze solid.The headmaster at that time,a Mr.Evans,allowed us kids to nip home when we needed the loo!!Unfortunatly we got a new headmaster who made everyone wait until a certain time and then we were all frogmarched along Peat Rd. to the new school.I seem to recall there were quite a few wee accidents!!!

Very modern the priesthood now. Rarely do you see a priest walking about now.

There were rumours going about for a couple of months that the priest intended selling of both the church and the church hall which is further down Peat Road. Turns out that after substantial sums of public money being poured into the church hall to put on a new roof he wants to build a new church hall nearer to the church

Don't know if he realises no one is buying land at the moment and I am sure he would need to get someone to take the land where the hall is located before he would get approval to build a new hall. Don't know where the other land is going to come from nearer the church.

I recently attended a funeral in the church and the priest attempted to re-write the most important story in the bible - that of Jesus' birth. It would appear that Jesus wasn't born in a stable but was born in the house of a family member because that is what people do the go to live with family for important events.

Just reviewed the news report in which Fr Neil McGarrity is quote.

Sounds like it is hoped the church will be renovated and that a meeting room will be build at the back of the church. Which sounds like it won't take up any more land just reduce the amount of space in the church.

The church celebrates it's 50th anniversary this year

Some one will also need to re-write some of the old carols and remove any mention of a manger

A bit of change of subject to go back to an earlier post.

I have had a look through some of my photos and found some covering the old school annexe buildings.

One has already been posted so I won't post it again.

In the centre you can see the Cardonald Priesthill Campus. This was a school annexe next to where Househillmuir Primary School was built.

It was demolished soon after this photo was taken following a fire

A stolen car was driven into the back of the building and set on fire causing substancial damage.

Fortunately I managed to take this photo long before St Bernard's was demolished to make way or the new school of the same name

Anyone know which schools were associated with Stan's Den and the Cardonald Priesthill Campus

What a brill photo
I have never seen it from that view. Nice to see a bit of the woods surviving, though it looks like they have been thined out a lot. I remember a lot more trees that that.
A nice view of the school's gym & dinner hall.
Don't know what that grey-green roofed building is, when i went to school there that was a gate with a brick wall in the shape of a rectangle.

Idiot that i am i was looking for the bike shed that was at the back of the playground. That must have gone a long time ago.
Strange to see that yard in the foreground, as i remember that as a piece of waste ground. A good place for finding newts.
Last time i was up in Southie they were just starting the ground work for the houses you can see on the ridge.
Will it still be south nitshill or have they decieded on a posher name?
