M74 flyover at Pollokshaws RoadHad an interesting phone with the friendly PR officer at M74 development office today. I had specific questions about what would be happening to the Pollokshaws Road at the junction with Devon and Kilbirnie Streets. As a frequent pedestrian here the junction is a nightmare, since it has traffic lights but no pedestrian signals, and a surprisingly large number of people, like me, seem to walk between the city and Govanhill. I've only been coming this way after dark as a result of the film festival, but I'm surprised to see quite a few pedestrians (including women walking alone, which surprised me).
The gentleman called me back after taking my questions. Apparently the site bounded by Pollokshaws Road, Devon Street, Pollokshaws Road and Turniff Street (where the first flyover piers are now set and wrapped in plastic) is assigned to be an enclosed car park, providing parking for an adjacent 'development'. He couldn't tell me what development that would be, but he assured me that the parking be enclosed (in brick) underneath the flyover, and that bright LED lighting would be used.
Call me cynical, but I'm fearful that this is going to become a pretty grim underpass for the Pollokshaws Road. There is some hope though, as the junction with Devon and Kilbirnie Streets is set to be 're-aligned', presumably with adequate pedestrian crossings...
Am I alone in being worried that the M74 will make this a pretty unattractive, even unsafe route for pedestrians to walk between the city and southside?

I've been wishing they'd stick pedestrian crossing on that junction for years, same as further towards town at Nelson St and Eglington St. I don't think the junction will become any worse than some of the ones under the M8 and maybe it may become more popular for pedestrian use if it's done well.

i know the former freight yard off cathcart rd is the site of the new larkfield bus garage, but that won't be completed till the m74 is built.
