Local jobs vow in £36m project for 300 homes

Local jobs vow in £36m project for 300 homes (Evening Times)

A £36MILLION project has been unveiled for more than 300 new houses in a
deprived Glasgow community.

The announcement for Govan comes at a time when many housing
programmes across the country are being shelved or suspended due to
the credit crunch.

Glasgow-based Cruden Building and Renewals will build the homes next
year on sites in and around Orkney Street, Golspie Street and Harhill
Street.

The project - a mix of rented and private housing - is part of the Central
Govan Action Plan, aimed at transforming the area.

All jobs, apprenticeships and contracts the development brings will be given
to local people where possible.

The agreement has been secured by Glasgow South West Regeneration
Agency working in partnership with job creation agency South West Working.
Ian Davidson MP, chairman of South West Working, signed the contract at
Govan's Pearce Institute.

He said: "This is just the kind of development and investment we need in
and around the south-west of Glasgow.

"It is essential that companies being awarded public contracts in the area
look to the local workforce for job creation, apprenticeships and development
of the local people.

"I'm delighted Cruden has signed up to this agreement and I'm glad to
have played my part in making it happen. This is simply the start of the
South West Working group in action.

"Over the coming years we will forge strong links with planned
development for the benefit of the community."

Recruitment will be carried out by GSWRA and the agency has pledged to
use its expertise to attract local workers.

Govan set for £3.5m new homes move (Evening Times)

A £3.5MILLION housing project will help breathe new life into a rundown
area of Govan.

The site of the 24-flat development - on Aboukir Street in Linthouse - has
lain derelict for almost 40 years.

Glasgow-based developer Merchant Homes and Linthouse Housing Association
unveiled the plans as part of the regeneration of the area.

The news comes a day after a £36m project for new homes was announced
for central Govan.

That project will ensure jobs for local people and the appointment of Merchant
Homes to oversee the Aboukir Street flats will also mean more employment.

New deal sees Govan land £40m house jackpot (Evening Times)

HOUSING projects worth almost £40million have been given the green light
in Govan, Glasgow.

They come on top of a £14m development about to start in Harhill Street
and a £12m scheme in the pipeline for Garmouth Street.

They bring the total value of housing to be built in the area to £66m.

The latest to get permission are four separate developments.

• Govan Housing Association and Cruden Estates are to spend more than £14m
building 102 flats and houses in eight blocks in Golspie Street and Shaw Street.

• The association is also to spend £11m constructing 63 flats in three blocks
at Govan Road, Orkney Street and Broomloan Road. One of these, the Gateway
building, will be six storeys.

• Govan Housing Association has also received permission to build 58 homes
in three blocks in Wardrop Street/Rathlin Street at a cost of £7m.

• A plan by Bield Housing Association to build 27 flats in one block at the corner
of Pearce Lane/Pearce Street has also been approved. The development cost
will also run into millions of pounds.

Steve Inch, Glasgow City Council's executive director of development and
regeneration, said: "The Gateway building has been designed to act as a
beacon establishing the regeneration of Govan as it is approached along
Govan Road from the east."

Bield Housing Association specialises in housing for the elderly, with the
aim of allowing them to live independent lives with high quality care and
support.
