Kinning Park Mystery StreetI’m a newbie here, so apologies if I’m posting this in the wrong place. I’m hoping for some help identifying an old street (which hopefully didn’t just exist in my mind!)
Back in the 1960s I used to come home from Midland Street to Pollok on the 50. The first half of the journey was like an old black and white film filled with grimy shades of grey and black but in the midst of all this was one wee island of green, a small park fenced off in the middle of a side street around Tradeston/Kinning Park. I remember the street led off south from Paisley Road West but can’t remember which street it was.
Here’s my pathetic attempt at an image of it as I remember it looking south from Paisley Road. Any ideas for the street name?
Cheers

It may have been Pollok Street which lay between Kingston and Kinning Park.
Was it off to the left as you were heading out of town? Here's the wee gardens in Pollok St with Paisley Road at the top.

Pollok St sounds about right, the only other one I can think of would be Plantation Park also running southward at Edwin St off Paisley Rd in Kinning Park.

Wow!! Thanks for your replies guys and for all the trouble you've gone to in adding pictures, much appreciated.
Yes, Schiehallion, it was on the left hand side coming out of town.
Pollok Street (how appropriate) certainly seems to fit the bill. There were indeed roads up either sides of the gardens. I'm presuming the aerial photograph was taken well before the 1960s as I don't remember what looks like a monument/clock at Paisley Road, just plain iron railings. But the street is certainly wide enough and has the same geometry.
It may have been have Edwin St. Scary but I think I might have remembered it a bit better as my dad drove a bus out of Govan garage in Brand St and I was up there occasionally and so think I was a wee bit more familiar with the area around Lorne St. But as I say can't remember where it was so I may well be talking sh!te (not unusual for me I assure you).
Once again thanks a lot for taking the time to post responses and so quickly. I know it’s a stupid wee thing to ask about but it’s something I’ve pondered about for years and obviously there’s no sign of it on Paisley Rd nowadays.
Cheers

Excellent. That's spot on Schiehallion, thanks.
Thanks very much Stuball. I fired the terms "Hollowhorn" and "Pollok Street" into Google and found the article you are on about... http://www.hiddenglasgow.com/foru...amp;hilit=The+Lost+Gardens+Pollok It is indeed a great article. Thanks a lot man.
I'm getting a bit overwhelmed with all this now , I think I need a lie down now.

Hi mondobongo, here's some Pollok St for you.
The west side of the middle bit, between Houston St and Ardgowan St, April 1974
Pollok St UP Church, on the east side just round the corner from PRW, June 1975

Yip that`s the Pollok St I remember.
In the second pic the white shopfront is the Clachan Bar ( it was yellow in real life) and above that is my bedroom window
Great memories thanks

Thanks, Scary. I'd wondered what the name of the pub was, annoyed I hadn't got it in the photo.
Correction to my last post - PRW is still PR at this point, of course.

You just beat me to it, I was gonna correct you on that
Did you do much more in Kingston area as you are a box of surprises streap, lots of pubs and off-sales in Pollok St and surrounding areas, did you get them ? If you did I can name them as I know everyone and every shop in a mile radius

OMG Streapadair, that top picture is exactly as I remember it, you are a star! Thank you so much. This site is fekn amazing.
Scary… I never knew my dad’s real name was George!… maybe he lived a dual life and went incognito as soon as he donned that dark green uniform and climbed up into the cabin of his Leyland Titan.
Oh no... … I can already see myself on “Trisha” taking the DNA test… i.e. the Drumoyne Number4 Analysis.
Seriously though, your maw is probably way too young to have worked with him, my old man last drove a bus about 1968.

Not a lot more, sorry. I've got just about enough material for a 'West to Govan' collection, but it's a bit feeble.
One thing you could maybe tell me - in 1973/4 there was a pub called Fergie's a few door along from the Grand Ol' Opry. The future Sir Alex, I'm thinking? No doubt about Jim Baxter's (PR Toll) or Kai Johansen's (corner of Govan Rd and Stag St) though.

I don`t have any memory of a pub called Fergie`s, i`m assuming it would have been where the present day Angel bar is situated a few doors down from the Opry. The Angel has had a few names over the years and it`s possible it was called Fergie`s at one point too, but as i was away from the area between 70 and 78 I may have missed the namechange, I knew it as Burns Cottage mostly.
I had a pint or 2 in Baxters and remember Johansens place too but was too young to get a pint in there.
I will ask around

Correct. It's still of a blue persuasion, I see (from StreetView).

Correct, alex ferguson was manager of St Mirren or was it East Stirling around that time.

Right, thanks. I looked up Wiki and in fact he was just finishing as a player, at Ayr Utd, when I took the photo, April 1974.

Houston StreetHope no-one minds, but following on from previous posts on Pollock Street/Weir Street (and I remember the gardens in Pollock St), I'm interested in pictures of Houston Street. My grandparents ran a wee shop on one side, then on the other side, in the 1960s, and I would love to know if there are any pics? From memory (which is very vague) it was a genny all-sorts (newsagent, tobacconist, sweeties, wood, washing powder, etc.).
Also, why are there so many different 'area' names for that area? I understood Houston Street to be in Plantation (according to my aged uncle), but it appears it also comes under Kingston, Tradeston, and Kinning Park. Any clues??
Your help is eagerly anticipated
