Hartwood Hospital (Asylum)

More pictures soon... and hopefully someone will type some further details on the place :)

Before anyone thinks of visiting, beware it has security and patrolled at random intervals. The big fella will just kick you off site

Hope you managed to get up the tower on the right of your photo there Stu...
Did you make it to the Morgue ?
I dropped my Nikon in there and killed it dead. It was whilst climbing in a ground level window i dropped the bugger.

Never seen any security on my visit but have never been back since either.
Stuball

Nah, we got busted before we found the morgue

It looks like a load of weights with the groove being there for adding and removing them. Maybe used for some poor sods who were in traction?
HollowHorn

That is one beautiful set of buildings, it's criminal to see them going to ruin.

Yes, it is. And the stonework is all still in good condition - no reason they couldn't
be restored/rescued.

Well, when you see what they have achieved at Leverndale it would be a pity if those buildings were demolished. What is the future there, btw? Is there a plan to develop it as is?
wee minx

Stuball in the clock tower, you get an idea of the size of the clocks now.

Fungus was everywhere

So many layes of paint.

Ah, the prop from the opening scene of my colleague David Lynch's Blue Velvet.

It's heartening to see that recycling has taken a foothold even in my profligate industry.

Fast Eddie and I went to Hartwood last month.
At least we tried, the security guard launched a pre-emptive strike... :(

Still not made it back there :(

Bored at uni the other day roaming about on Live Maps I noticed that the ariel view of Hartwood was taken when it was still open

Just wanted to say thank you for your great pictures of the Hartwood Asylum.

I have been researching my family and found a death of a relative there in 1913 and was wondering what it looked like etc and found this great site!

Thanks for bringing the past to life so to speak for me!

Thanks! It looks a great site, I have loads of family from Glasgow so it is fantastic to see the effort and work people have put in.
Alex Glass

Any particular area you are interested in Gracie
Gracie08

Hi,

Well they all seemed to be involved one way or the other in the shipping industry, so they seem to be in Glasgow itself, Govan, Montrose, Renfrew etc.

I don't know if the addresses still exist, I can see on Google Earth that some streets still do but I guess there would have been a lot of bombing in the wars.
Cuban

Here's an aerial shot of the asylum showing all the wings intact:
Stuball

Nice one Cuban (Bloodhound?)

Welcome to UG
fastnet

Welcome to the site cuban.

Great pic.........
cybers

Couple of hours spent merrily wandering around inside and outside the perimiter fence quite legally thanks to a little ingenuity and a lot of guile.
Security is right on the ball and there is now a big ferocious dug on site.
Warnings for said dug are everywhere but you don't need to be able to read to hear the bugger.

You lot seem to have given up the challenge of late...
A little update...
Both towers internally have gone collapsed into the ground floor
Morgue and laundry now alarmed and made watertight used for storage of some kind of boxes and electrical equipment. Laundry room gone totally some internal wall collapse roof structure incomplete and on verge of collapse, Annexe block just inside main gate cieling collapse with asbestos visible main staircase collapse emergency stairs insecure on building exterior... All in all a pretty sad place now.

Stuball

The 2nd tour has collapsed inside? Jeeze... we climbed that last year and sat on the rood
cybers

Roof looks intact Stu but it looks more like a controlled collapse inside both towers.
Stuball

Its quite possible.... the floor before the clock was pretty dodgy as it was
Scary

I find it hard to believe that the towers have collapsed (controlled or otherwise) as they were solid when we went up

I was thinking the same thing because they don't like particularly flimsy from the photos.

Perhaps they were given a helpful nudge by someone with machinery or some internally supportive structure has been taken out or rotted.
Scary

My memory is, these stairs were carried by a steel `I` Beam that looked pretty good to me otherwise I would never have gone up.

cybers

Stairs are there till the first lift scary then rubble
wee minx

So whats wrong with climbing up rubble?
Cuban

Any idea when the other towers stairs collapsed? They were in roughly the same condition they were in over a year before when I was here five months ago.
