Glasgow Streets, Roads & Avenues

There are a lot of roads in Glasgow which are overlooked. But in order to get to where you are going you will have either walked or traveled on the roads of Glasgow. Some will have seen a lot of changes over the years whilst others will have been the same for a number of years.

When you are out and about why not take some photos of Glasgow's Roads.

Also the famous Bankend Street where the Ice Cream Wars resulted in the deaths of members of the Doyle Family.

Where does Argyle Street become Dumbarton Road ?

I always thought it was up by the Kelvin Hall where Argyle Street and Suchiehall Street came together, but that's the memory of a ten year old who left Glasgow for Australia in 1960 !

It's either side of Partick Bridge at the Kelvin Hall, which carried the road over
the Kelvin.

The silly thing is I do know that Dumbarton Road starts further up the road but for some reason I had a mental block and had it in my head that Dumbarton Road some how starts nearer to the City Centre

I think this is the Old Edinburgh Road but I'm not sure. Don't think it's any old farmers road with road markings. A bit of help with this one please. That's Baillieston lights in the distance with the Morrisons up to the left.

sh!te story but on the Kinning Park footbridge I witnessed a lorry jackknifing (real word) and the driver was in a sh!t state hanging right out the window, blood everywhere.

I also fell right on my arse on the ice one morning attempting to help a pregnant lassie I worked with and she didn't even notice. To make things worse my pieces fell over the bridge.

That bridge was not kind to me on my way to work.

Anyway back to proceedings.

Are the Infamous ones not the ones further West as for some reason i seem to remember a tale told to me as a kid that the pair at Charing Cross were the only ones of their type in the UK.
Could be wrong though !

Those are the same lanes, just at the other end where they leave and join at the Royal Inf.

Fantastic group of photos.

That Springburn Road one was the inspiration for this thread. When I saw the Andrew Charles Paul photos I thought it would be a good idea to get some photos of other road.

Hopefully in around 20 years time those who follow will appreciate seeing images of Glasgow's roads as they look today.

That is the old line of west bound carriageway of the A8, the east bound one was dug up and planted with the trees seen on the right.

Buchanan Street

I recently came across some views of Buchanan Street from the 1960's and it kinda threw me as to how much the northern end has changed.
It's almost unrecognisable today as it's dominated by the Buchanan Gallery's which covers much of the area in the pics below.

Any help on the early geography and layout would be much appreciated, I've tried my best with available archive material to try and piece it together.

OK these are the images that initially caught my eye which then led me to think about the bigger picture as how the area stands today.
I should also add that my memories of this area are from 1985-1990 just prior to the major re-development.    


First of a sequence of pics, could any one ID the road the van is travelling on and the side roads just out of shot? my guess is it's Dundas Place but it doesn't correlate with the present day

The truck has travelled along Cathedral St and is turning down into Buchanan
Street. The street that diagonally cut across that block was called Dundas Place.
For years, it was nothing more than a fenced off wasteground, though the street
was still visible through a mesh fence gate at either end. It's now buried under
the Buchanan Galleries. There was a pub on one of the corners called The
Five Ways, indicating that it was a five way road junction.

This old map shows it simply called Dundas Street, but it was renamed at some
point to distinguish it from Dundas Street itself.

Well done James  I was sure it was Cathedral Street although I didn't remember the actual layout of that top part of Buchanan/Dundas Street.

There where some amount of pubs at that end of the town.

It's all making sense now I was all over the place from Cathedral Street to Killermont Street  due to the amount of changes

That first building on Bath Street is also gone

This is the site which has held up the further development of the east side of Buchanan Street and the west side of West Nile Street and has had a couple of planning consents agreed.

It was the subject of a court case a couple of years ago. One of the developers made a model of the area which they brought to the Planning Committee. I wonder if they still have it.

'Ger-Aaldos Corner' has all the signage indicative of an ice-cream parlour / cafe. Though from the photos it would appear to br some sort of gentleman's outfitters, anyone have any history of the place?

It was Ger-Ralds not Geraldo's like an Italian Ice Cream Parlour but I can see where your coming from.
The external sign looks like it's displaying a pork pie hat or is it a trillby?  

Fess up you bought all your dancin' gear out of this place before jiving it up in the Locarno. In fact is that not a hip young HH in the dark suit checking out the wares in the display window?

If I remember correctly the site of the Five Ways is where Sainsbury's now lives (roughly) and the Northwestern corner was home to the George Hotel

Haven't some parts of Glasgow really changed !

James, those last three pictures are places that, in the memory of a person who left Glasgow as a ten year old show how much things can change and how much things can remain the same.

My memories of New City Road are that it was a link from Renfrew Street out to St George's Cross and then to Great Western Road (memories of the No 20 bus to Drumchapel).

The picture from St George's Cross out along Great Western Road actually looks very similar to my nearly fifty year old memories but my memories of Cowcaddens are that it was a very busy area, unlike your last photograph.

Am I havering, or do my recollections ring even just a little bit true ?

You are right. New City Road lead out to Great Western Road but when the M8
was built and Cowcaddens Street changed to Cowcaddens Road it was effectively
replaced by West Graham Street and a flyover. What would've been once a busy
section of road is now basically cut in two and quite ghost-like.

Thanks for your pictures as they, too, brought back a few memories.

The Great Western Road at Blairdardie still looks familiar after nearly fifty years away;  Monymusk Place in 'theDrum' looks a little different from when the No 9 Bus used to terminate up that way but I see buses are still up around there and the Rotherwood Avenue picture quickly sent me to Google Earth for I was sure it was somewhere in Knightswood.

Thanks Tombro. I grew up in Monymusk I know that area well.
The Drum has changed a lot, probably only 15% of the tenements left, with all of them 'up the hill' demolished.

I remember Whatlings doing the work on the motorway at the bottom of our back garden. Due to the location of our house they had to fit secondary glazing. My mother fought for them to secondary glaze all the windows. They intended to just do the back windows. She also gained concessions from them on the work to reconstruct our back garden. There was regular meetings with the local residents to agree timing of the blasting which was required to construct the motorway. When you pass by Barlinnie Prison heading east you can see the rocks before the flyover which replaced the old wooden bridge on Gartcraig Road.
