This may seem off topic but during the wander round the Red Road flats we went to the area where the local services where located.
What appeared at first to be a couple of local shops proved to be something more. Although much of what was previously available is now long gone. 
The complex was built over two levels with the entertainment located in the lower level. 
Although there only remains signs of what was a pub there was at one time a bingo located on the lower level. When we were wandering round the area we came across what we thought was a car park. I have since been told that this was where the bingo was located. 
At one time there was also a supermarket but it was destroyed by fire and demolished. 
Now only two shops appear to be still trading 
Although maybe this unit is open on selective days 
Although it may be slightly off topic it is a feature of high rise living. |

i think that pic there is the stairs to the car park.....
the only way into the bingo was the door next to the briggs bar(down the other stairs) the briggs had another door round the corner facing the play area too |

On a side note i worked on the red road flats in the 90's
They replaced all the windows and it was not a bad job for the first 3 or 4 weeks. Then the wieghted syringes started raining down on us. The gaffer refused to finish the job unless the scaffolders put a top lift above our heads... Kinda Ironic we wanted protection when these poor sods had to provide it. The first 10 floors were a piece of pi$$ .... after that we all got a little twitchy on the scaffold it was honestly the first job i had been on where everyone wanted to wear the harness. Not the place to be on a sunday morning after a right good session though

Glaswegiens looking back and thinking my god what were they thinking about when they were living in those awful places....but in these days of plenty its easy to forget how sh*te it must have been in the tenements ...those flats were a total world away from what had been before and its right that these now should be documented.....sorry... pissed again and on a rant | ||||

Cracking pics HH cant help but wonder if the bright yellow signs should not be in the background rather than the foreground building.
The wife had a mad as a brush aunty that lived in those multi's. She could not walk down the road without tasting stuff... Bus shelters, walls, lamp-posts lift buttons you name it it all got licked. She died and left almost 250k to an animal sanctuary as well as some generous bequeaths in her will for some members of the family... And some right good piss your self laughing remarks in her will for the vultures who only visited her when she was dead but to look at her you would have thought she was skint. Never judge a book by the cover. |

Glasgow's high riseWhen I was growing up in Blackhill (been a while ago) I was always fascinated by the high rise tower blocks around the city, and being able to see the Red Road blocks from my granny's window. And when we used to walk to my aunties in Barrowfield we'd pass along Millerston Street where the two other tower blocks were just being built.Does anyone know where Glasgow's highest tower blocks are. Are they the ones at Red Road? |

Almost certainly. They were, IIRC, 30, 31 and 32 storeys high. They were also the only steel-girder-framed towers built in the city, hence the reason they have to be dis-mantled as opposed to blown down... James H |

Looks like it, according to that. Funny how the Red Road flats are often called the tallest residential building in Europe though, innit? I see 240 Roystonhill is still listed there - that was blown down in June 1992, the first to get blown down in the city, IIRC. James H |

James, the 240 roystonhill block is listed as demolished on the cited source - skyscrapernews.com. the wiki entry is obviously a bit out of date but the source is more up to date although they haven't listed the Sighthill blocks as demolished | ||||

Remember one day in 1984 when I was working for Granada TV rentals and was delivering a telly to a flat in 240 royston..which has to be said was not the most salubrious of places.There was a guy waiting at the lift in the ground floor "foyer" with one of those total hardman dugs ..american pitbull or the like.. when the lift opened there was another guy with a gay dog...not sure which make... and the hardman dug went totaly berko and attacked it.It had its teeth right into the poor gay dog and wouldnt let go .The hardmans owner seeing I had tools asked to borrow a screwdriver which I gave him and he stuck it right into his dogs mouth and twisted it which did the trick..always been wary of those dogs ever since.. | ||||

It's all change at the Gorbals now that the freightliner terminal has long gone and so does it's long historical railway association. The M74 extension will cut right through this scene. Ironically a new Bus depot will be built on part of the site once the roadworks are complete. The planning application has recently been submitted.

Sure did Kev.... Was doing a wee job for a mate with a SkiDoo in the basin and this was an idea i had for about 6 months for this photo.
Though it was only when i went to go back to the car i noticed the great sunset behind me.
