Glasgow Hutchie Towers - thanks Le Corbusier

For those who like a bit of serious journalism on architecture, an excellent article appeared in last Saturdays Times on 'Le Corbusier' – the man who largely invented residential tower blocks and the grey concrete ‘brutal’ style of architecture.

In fact Basil Spence’s hideous and inhumane Glasgow Hutchie tower blocks came from Corbusier’s teaching. Basil got a knighthood out of that… Glasgow residents got chronic dampness, mould and depression and a massive legacy of debt when the disaster was demolished.

According to the article Corbusier was in truth as deceptive and ugly as much of his architecture. He was really called Charles Edouard Jenanneret-Gris… but that probably didn’t suit if you were a poseur who wanted to re-invent yourself as some great architectural prophet of the modern world (just a pity about the people who have to inhabit many of your designs?).
