It wasn't that long ago the Glasgow skyline was full of church spires. We're a city of heathens as my granny used to say
It begs the question how many have been demolished in the last 20-30 years?
There's been quite a few converted into flats though.

With regards to your image below Alex was this a church as i am just a whippersnapper and details are a little sketchy this was once the occupational therapy unit.... Before that and this is where it seems to get a little sketchy it was Sydney Street School. Could be the wrong building entirely and am still waiting on my father bieng well enough to confirm some of the details i thought i had. It has been a building i was fascinated by as a kid and had forgotten about it till i had cause to be diverted that way one night .... Some interesting people round that way lmao.
One i took late at night of the same building.

Alex Glass
|
You may be right Cybers
From the front it looks like a church and I have vague recollection of reading about it recently but may have the wrong building.
Maybe someone will be able to help with more details.

Is the other place not housed in the business centre that is behind this building.
As for the frontage on Duke street i am sure that was a church though i remember it as a drop in centre for the homeless in the 80's and 90's
Are the fibreglass elephants still across the road... Or have they been nicked.

Corner of Pitt Street? Formerly the Shack nightclub? I've got a poor camera phone picture of the front the day after it burned and the pillars have collapsed

From http://www.scotcities.com/central.htm
A purer form of Greek Revival was to be found just 100 metres away from Thomson's masterpiece
in the form of Elgin Place Congregational Church at the corner of Pitt Street and Bath Street.
It joined the ranks of Glasgow's lost architecture after a blaze in November 2004 which was so severe
that the church could not be saved. Demolition commenced on Christmas Eve and was completed
in early 2005. The Church had been used as a nightclub under a number of guises, Cardinal Follies,
the Temple and, from 2002, the Shack.
It was built in 1856 as an independent chapel and became a Congregational Church later in the century.
It was a well known landmark principally for its jet black colour. Unlike most buildings of the same
age the stone had never been cleaned and it carried one and a half centuries of industrial grime
on its outer skin.
The architect, John Burnet, did not attempt to add modern touches to the ancient Greek style, and
the simplicity of the building was its main attraction. The raised portico with Ionic columns led to the
entrances to the body of the church and allowed the ancillary accommodation in the
semi-basement to have natural light from windows along the side elevation.

Another Drumchapel one (I never stray far eh? ) Drumchapel Baptist Church, Lillyburn Place.
Don't know if it's still in use, the roof has been rebuilt fairly recently, it used to be flat. Poor wee place used to be always getting smashed, set on fire, or tanned, when I lived opposite (no connection btw ).

It was great to see the Hermon Baptist Church again, I remember reading an article some time ago about the chaplaincy and church at the western infirmary.
The church is full sized and set amongst all the buildings, it had a roof top view photograph of it - very hidden but welcomes all faiths and is a full size place of worship.
You access it through the hospital (i have a vague recollection of ward 9).
I have always meant to have a look but never got round to it. Did i dream this or does it exist? had a quick google but me thinks i might be too tired to concentrate.

Found an article in the Evening Times Archive - not much info in it. Probably not as much of a "Secret church" as i had imagined.

If one is going to bash one's bible, one might as well do it with style.
Should there be a fire in the semi-derelict building next door, I'm sure it will be the merest coincidence.

It has been bothering me that there was no visible name. It is such a nice wee church and when I was in the grounds I was approached by the owner of the work-yard next door to find out what I was doing. The owners had asked him to keep an eye on the property and he does a good job. He was over within minutes of me stepping a foot inside the gate.

That is smart but i still maintain the best church that stood in dennistoun was the one they demolished ...
It stood on Armadale Street between Craigpark Drive and Golfhill Drive and was quite an imposing place.
Need to find out if my aunt has any negs of this kicking around as we were always getting photos took in the playground across from it.
