I take it that it's one of these barges that now resides on the grass at Pinkston?:

It's only by looking at those aerial photos you see the extent of the communal air raid shelters that were built in tenement back courts throughout the city.

Well spotted Schiehallion aslo worth noting is the use of public spaces like this example in a small playpark in the Govanhill area.

Due east of that park, you'll see more 'public space' ones immediately north of the Victoria Primary School in Batson St. That never developed area used to be a small hill where the kids slid down on boards.
In 1964 Glasgow Corporation were given a government grant to remove the communal air raid shelters. The penny finally dropped at Westminster that these shelters in any future war would be of no use! Kaboom!
978 were removed in the winter of 1963 and more would go in 1964 if they were unsound or were in the way of a future development. Even with that number removed, some 1400 still existed.
Alec Douglas-Home's Tory government had given the limited grant to create 'winter employment' for unskilled manual workers in demolishing them during 1963-64. Most of the rest appear to have been demolished in 1968

Sorry GK, thought I'd answered this already.
There are no higher resolution images than those already posted. We haven't been
given copies to distribute.

Ah right, cheers James. I thought they were on a CD like the other lot.
Hang on, what does Fjord mean here ?
| Quote: | | * The images posted here are low resolution versions to show the area of coverage. What we aim to do over time is take a closer look using the Hi-Res images at places of interest and there are lots! |

I was having a look through the collection as it is really quiet on here and no one seems to be active at the moment. Any way - I noticed in the City Centre 1970 aerial photo that only the Kingston Bridge appears to be completed and there doesn't seem to be much of the M8 on either side of the bridge.
It got me thinking about the Glasgow 1980 video which shows the Queen Mother opening the bridge and another part of the video shows sections of the M8 but there doesn't appear to be any visible work going on!
I also notice that on a couple of the Oatlands photos you can see the whole of Richmond Park.
It looks so good that the photo must have been taken when the park was at it's peak.
Maybe worth a project on the history of the park. I saw a book somewhere which has a chapter on each of Glasgow's parks. I will need to try and see if I can remember where I saw it to see what it says about Richmond Park.
Does anyone know anything about either the construction of the Kingston Bridge and M8 or Richmond Park?

I know that the Kingston bridge was heated during the winter to stop ice forming.... it was a central heated bridge! I have a picture somewhere of an accident on the bridge which was a result of the heating being switched off during the miner strikes (I think)
I'm not sure if the bridge is heated anymore but I'm guessing no

I have a video of the recent repairs and the moving of the bridge. They didn't mention anything in that about having to turn the heating off during the work so maybe due to cost it was discontinued some years ago.
I should copy that video and load it up on YouTube
Just a thought - I know some people where out with Falseface n the 2nd January doing another M74 walk. Maybe it would be a good project to use the aerial photos to track where the M74 should have went. I am sure they should cover it most of the way through the south of Glasgow.
I was hoping that the aerials in the collection had some views of Glasgow Green as I have a chapter giving the history of the Green and was contemplating doing a project. I will have to use the others as they do show the whole of the Green.

Would you like an aerial shot of the green from 2007? It's not a perfect overhead shot but its the green :)
Oh, I have pictures of the Kingston Bridge when it was closed for moving and some pictures of the first vehicles over (large bunch of motorbikes)

Dalmarnock Army Depot?I was taking a closer look at the Dalmarnock pics and was drawn to the amount of vehicles in storage in a depot near Shawfield stadium given that there's very few private or commercial vehicles with the exception of Trams on the road in any of the images makes me suspect that they're army trucks and various other types.
There's also what looks like Bailey pontoon bridges as well as some other small boats in amongst the rather neatly parked herringbone rows. Seeing as these pics were taken just after the war I'd guess this is where all the surplus military hardware ended up after de-mob in Europe.
I couldn't find anything online regarding this location during WW2 which makes it all the more interesting unless anyone has another suggestions. Maybe Grandad bought a bargain 2 and a half tonner at auction back in the day?
I note that in the present day photo there's a Camp Road that runs through the former site... is that a clue to it's past?

That picture had always intrested me I'm sur some of that land is now TA
so that might explain the MOD conection (transport dev?)
It is a much smaller site now and i'm sur the TA transport moved over to Kings Park.

That would be great Stu
I will try and get hold of the book on Glasgow's Parks and get a better copy of the section on Glasgow Green and either copy it or re-type it out and post it up in full.
I also got a couple of books recently with a couple of old photos taken within the park.

Fjord. Thanks so much for the aerial photos of North Pollok. Great stuff!!!
Helped resolve an ongoing dispute between me and my sister as to whether there were tenements on both sides of Bargaran Road (she was right ), I thought there were just the big ones on the north side.
Anyway, thanks for posting the pics, I've been enjoying looking over them for ages.

You were probably thinking of the next road up Barochan Road that ran parallel with Bargaran Road and had tenements on one side and calfhill court on the other. Hope that helps
