City of Glasgow Poorhouse

Would this poorhouse be roughly where the Buchanan bus station is present day ?

Starting at Buchanan Railway St the poorhouse looks to be to the east of it on old maps at roughly Parliamentry Rd, north side, and North Hanover St.

Was always curious, the great great grandpaw spent a weekend in it back in 1890.

Suppose it better than being in present day Baird St polis office.

Then again maybe not.

The poor house was where Caledonian University is. There was 2 mansion houses on Parliamentary Road at no. 328 and 336 which were the Surgeon Generals houses and located at the original gates. These houses were later owned by Caledonian Railways.

This picture HERE is the gates and no. 328 to the left

I remember reading about these poorhouses several years ago, and thought it great history...
however, I also remember that the City Chambers/Lord Provost had a special charity fund for funerals of the poor, but think that this disappeared, with DHSS payments.
However, interesting that I think that this was set-up from donations, so fund could still be there, although who would access it now would be interesting

I found this site while looking for some info on industrial schools. Vast amount  of detail on poorhouses, e.g. complete 1881 census lists of staff and inmates.
