Burns put in spotlight, Jan 23-25 2009Burns put in spotlight (Evening Times)
GLASGOW is planning a spectacular lightshow to celebrate the 250th
anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns.
The stunning display will be screened on the front of the City Chambers in
George Square, following on from the success of a lightshow at Glasgow
Cathedral.
The new show will be the work of projection artist Ross Ashton who was
responsible for the dramatic lightshow on Buckingham Palace for the
Queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002.
He also designed a breathtaking display on Edinburgh Castle for the
Military Tattoo.
The £60,000 show, which will depict the life and times of Scotland's national
poet, will light up the City Chambers from January 23 and will end on
Burns birthday on January 25.
It will run from around 5.30pm until 9pm.
It is part of Homecoming Scotland 2009 which celebrates Robert Burns'
birth with a year-long programme of events across the country.
Glasgow houses one of the biggest Burns' collections in the world which is
kept in the Mitchell Library.

It sounds great but I really think the £60k could be better spent instead of blowing it on a couple of light bulbs and coloured gels.... especially in these current financial crisis times

I really don't like that being done to buildings of such architectural importance...I think it cheapens them. Robert burns does not need it..he does just fine. The money is being squandered

Burns bright in the heart of Glasgow (Evening Times)
SCOTLAND'S National Bard Robert Burns became the face of Glasgow City
Chambers as Homecoming Scotland celebrations were showcased in the city's
George Square.
The public were last night given a sneak preview of the dramatic lighting
programme by London-based artist Ross Ashton.
The 15-minute projection of moving images will be shown with accompanying
music and a narrative soundtrack on the outside of the City Chambers
between 5.30pm and 9pm today and tomorrow.
The projection will also be shown from 6pm on Sunday when a host of
performers, including the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, former Pop Idol winner
Michelle McManus and country dancers will entertain onlookers.
Hosted by comedian Andy Cameron, the colourful light show will also
feature pieces from Glasgow's Mitchell Library's Burns collection, one of
the biggest in the world.
The illuminations will also transform the building's facade into a bed of
roses as the celebrations to mark the 250th anniversary of the poet's
birth get under way.

Aye, right enough Reverend Jolly, we shouldnae spend oor bawbies on nonsenses like celebrations owe Burns and awe that pagan Christmas thing... I mean, at a time of recession and depression who wants cheered up way such sheer wastrel licentiousness as public celebrations in the civic realms.
Anywae, there's little maer enjoyable than being dull, down and dour. Noo, could yi pass me that cauld porridge

An ye wad believe me,
On her cnut there growes nae hair,
That's the thing that grieves me.
It vexed me sair, it plagued me sair,
It put me in a passion,
To think that I haed wad a wife,

Lets try no tae forget the forgotten
Address tae a fart
Oh what a sleekit horrible beastie
Lurks in yer belly efter the feastie
As ye sit doon amongst yer kin
There sterts tae stir an enormous wind'
The neeps an' tatties an' mushy peas
Stert workin' like a gentle breeze
But soon the puddin' wi' the sonsie face
Will have ye blawin' a' ower the place.
Nae matter whit the hell ye dae
A'body's gonnae hae tae pay
Even if ye try tae stifle
It's like a bullet oot o' a
rifle
Haud yer bum tight tae the chair
Tae try an' stop the leakin' air
Shift yersel fae cheek tae cheek
Pray tae God it disnae reek.
But aw yer efforts gan
asunder
Oot it comes like a clap o' thunder
Ricochets aroon' the room
Michty me! A sonic boom
God Almichty, it fairly reeks!
Hope I huvnae s**t ma breeks!
Tae the bog ah'd better scurry,
Ach, whit the hell, it's no ma worry.
A'body roon aboot me chokin'
Yin or twa were nearly boakin'
I'll feel better for a while
Cannae help but raise a smile.
Wis him! I shout with accusin' glower,
Alas! Too late! He's just keeled ower
Ye dirty bugger, they shout and stare
A didnae feel welcome ony mair
Where e'r ye be let yer wind gan free
Sounds like just the job
for me
Whit a fuss at Rabbie's party
Ower the sake o' one wee farty.

Well done.
How was it?

Thanks Alex, it was really good. We were there for over 2 hours. We watched the projection that was a lot better than I thought it was going to be. We then went over to stage to watch the dancers, the choir, The Red Hot Chili Pipers and a bit of Michelle McManus.
The fireworks topped it all off nicely. The wee man loved that bit.

Thanks again Alex. Due to the lack of tripod and available light I got about 10 OK pictures out of 202. Thankfully it's all digital. :)
