Any idea what street this might be

Brought back childhood memories of playing on "sites" like this and
the whole city that I knew of seemed to look the same.
Its in Townhead somewhere..anybody see anything they recognise.
scallopboy

I'm pretty sure it isn't Cathcart Road.
rotten milk

what's the shop name on the right hand side there?
find oot where they had branches, would cut it doon a bit?
d'ye have a bigger photie?
james73

If it's Townhead there will be none of those buildings left. At all.

I think the sign says 'Surgery' The building to the rear of the tenement may give a clue to the location.
Scary

My first thought was `Surgery` too HH, there were 2 of them in Kingston one on Paisley Road and one in Weir St...Obviously nowhere near Townhead, but they had the same signage and Green fronts.

Is it Parliamentary Road

Shame on you Alex, lets not go there again....
Chief Inspector

Hate to use the phrase "chimney evidence" but there are two very different types of tenement in the picture and the attic room/dormer
should make it slightly more easy to spot from an aerial picture.
I'm with you Alex Parliamentray Road.
rotten milk

above the surgery, looks like bay windows, too? (well, not full-on bays, but they stick out a bit, i.e. not flat-fronted)

Images like this are very sad..if you think about it generations grew up in these buildings and they were torn down in days. What a pity

again not much to go on but,any ideas where these could be?
Fjord

The top pic looks like the Gorbals with the flats at Waddel Court under construction.

No idea about the bottom one although the decorative style of stonework facade might be a clue.
kev

Thought it was the Gorbals...That area seemed to have the roads configured like nowwhere else in the city ie .. long straight flat roads full of tenements stretching as far as the camera could see.Cant remember seeing any other photos of areas that looked the same...stand to be corrected though..

I think the second shot is of Abbotsford Place in the Gorbals (properly Laurieston), built in the 1830s and cleared around 1974. They were fine tenements, handsome and spacious, intended as a middle class district, but fell on hard times.

These are a couple of shots I took in April and July 1973. They're not conclusive evidence, but you can see the family resemblance.

46-50 Abbotsford Place, west side, south of Cumberland Street

1-45 Abbotsford Place, east side, south of Bedford St.

I took a few hundred b&w street shots in Glasgow in the mid-70s, many of buildings now long gone, and if anybody's interested I could knuckle down, get them scanned, and put them up on here.

Hello everyone, btw. First post, but I've done a bit of lurking.
james73

streapadair, and great pics.

And yes, by all means post your old pics on here.

greta pics, streapadair

get scanning and posting!

your phots seem so 'close-up' and sharp, feels like you're there looking at that moment in time.

a lot of b/w photos seem softer, more 'remote' even, but your's are bang on

get a thread up in the 'from the past' section, i'm sure you'll find plenty folk interested!
streapadair

Thanks, James and rotten milk.

A slight problem is that a lot of the more interesting ones are on an obsolete film format (127 size) which my scanner doesn't like, but I'll find some workaround.

There's a few colour shots too, e.g. remember when the Carrick toppled over?
Scary

Great pics streapadair, I look forward to seeing more like that
Stuball

Aww man, I'd love to go exploring in those buildings :)

Wow Fantastic photos

 to Urban Glasgow Streapadair

Can't wait to see more Please keep them coming.

Thanks, guys. Don't think I've got much choice, have I?

So, I've been scanning away like stout Cortez (the easy ones that I printed off 30+ years ago - the ones that are negs only will take longer) and I'll post them soon.

I don't want to take over this thread, so I'll start a new one (something like Last Days of the Old Gorbals) - which forum would be best for it? It will be several pages long and use a good chunk of bandwidth (not that I understand these things). I've no idea how this site is financed, so let me know if I'm putting up too much.
cybers

This looks like it is about to get another sudden influx of grand photos.
Looking forward to see ing this thread emerge if the taster is anything to go by.

The Glasgow from the Past section is ideal for this sort of thing.
