Remember watching a documentry years ago and it described these buildings as " Galleons sailing on the sea" or words to that effect...Didnt pay to much attention at the time but looking at some photographs of them I can see what the guy was on about. My question is Where in relation to the Gorbals today did they stand ?

Kev - they stood on Old Rutherglen Road. Amazingly, the church survives to this day.

Cheers James..another fab aeriel photo....I have taken a wee shine to the Gorbals since strep posted his superb set. Being from the north of the river the south side was always far away and not of much interest..Shame Basil Spence,s buildings didnt work as i think they looked fantastic.Wonder if they were too hastily demolished just like a lot of the buildings prior to them.

Remember going with my Mum to mass at St. Francis's on a Thursday night, EVERY Thursday night!!!! We went by bus from Linthouse and got off on Old Rutherglen Road and had to walk under/through the QE flats. Was told off every week for running up the big slopes rather than walking along nicely!!!

Couple of construction phase pics

Workies pouring the concrete for the legs

Photo of the model which was used for things like working out shadows during sunlight etc..most buildings had models made of them until C.A.D came along.

Interior of one of the flats

Wonderful looking buildings
