Market homes in on bandstand site

A HISTORIC landmark in the East End of Glasgow looks likely to become
home to a new market.

The Bridgeton Cross bandstand, which is 133 years old, and the land
around it will see around 20 street traders set up on a weekday.

It is hoped the stalls, which are expected to sell a variety of goods from
fresh food to clothes, will also act as a meeting point for local people.

A planning application has been made by the city council's Markets Group.

It already runs farmers' markets in Queen's Park and Partick and other
markets in Govan, Drumchapel and Easterhouse, as well as a Sunday car
boot sale in Blochairn.

A council spokesman said: "If approval is given it is anticipated the market
will be bright and vibrant, adding something to the community.

"We want it to be a venue for them to meet, chat and buy some essentials.

"The Markets Group has more than 25 years' experience of running these
type of operations and is looking forward to ensuring this new venture is
successful."

The cast iron bandstand, also know as the Bridgeton Umbrella, was put up
in 1875.

It sits at the junctions of London Road, Dalmarnock Road, Main Street and
James Street.

It used to be a meeting point for people going to the nearby Olympia cinema
and was a favourite spot for public speakers.

Traffic is a wee bit close to it. Once the stalls are set up there won't be much room for the shoppers.

Not keen on this bit in the article "Paddy's Market will be shut by the autumn and the area transformed, as revealed by the Evening Times in March."

Where am I going to buy my parallel import tobacco now?

Bridgeton's 'umbrella' to get a £1million makeover (Evening Times)

A HISTORIC Glasgow landmark is about to be transformed as part of a
£1million revamp. Work at Bridgeton Cross will begin later this month and it
will see the A-listed Bridgeton Shelter and Clock - known affectionately as 'The
Umbrella' - restored to the grandeur of its original unveiling in 1875.

New Caithness granite stone paving, similar in look to the pedestrianised areas
of Glasgow city centre, will also be laid at the Cross and further improvements
will be made to James Street, Landressy Street and part of London Road.

The work, expected to last a year, will see the Cross become more
pedestrian-friendly, while new benches, bins and planters will be installed
and bus shelters will be improved.

To increase security and safety CCTV systems will be improved and new
street lights will be added to improve visibility. Existing trees will be removed
and replaced, while the long-closed below street-level toilet block will be infilled
and the surrounding railings taken away.

And there will also be a memorial to Robert Burns in recognition of the
Bridgeton Burns Club, one of the oldest in the world, formed in 1870.

Regeneration company Clyde Gateway has given the contract for the job to
Land Engineering, one of the biggest Scottish firms involved in public area
improvement, and they are expected to start on Monday October 26.

I wonder if the new paving will be red, white and blue, it will save some of the locals having to paint them
